primary：先发优势
可否记得predict。
“预言”就是“预（pre)”和“言(dict）”。
pre=before在……之前。
pri与pre不但长得像（resemble each other in appearance)，意思也相近(similar in meaning)。
You may have fallen in love many times prior to this.
You may have fallen in love many times before this.
You may have failen in love many times previously.
三句意思一样：在此之前你可能多次坠入爱河。
活动一下脑子，琢磨一下两个表达：
the primitive people
the primitive forest
拜托不要盯着整个primitive苦苦思索：看pri,联系整个表达。什么民？什么森林？
先民/原始人。
原始森林。 我要高分
与pre-不同的是，pri-的意思常有引申。
Reading comprehension中常问：The primary reason for...is____。
说成“在前面的原因”有点别扭。不错：首要的原因。此处有时用的另外一个词是foremost更加清楚：fore就是before中的fore, most就是“最”。
同样，the primary school: 小学。
人比人气死人。pri-还常表在人之先，表优先权优势特权等。
Give priority to your way of thinking prior to learning.
在学习之前，优先考虑一下你的思维方式。
An effective approach entitles you to many privileges.
一种有效的方法可使你享有很多优势。
People born or grown in underprivileged circumstances can be privileged in terms of other things.
生于或长于不利环境的人可能在其它方面具有优势。
characterize: 被动不被
此词常用被动，主动非常少见。
The American values is characterized by individualism.
美国人价值观的特点是个人主义。
表达be characterized by是一个典型正宗的被动语态，译文上却没有被动的痕迹。
老鞋谓之“被动不被”——被动中的异类，遇之必斩尽杀绝——记住！
先是我们比较熟悉的，梳理一下：
It is said...
It is reported...
It is estimated...
It is rumored...
据说/据报告/据估计/据传……
另外，老外们在表述观点的时候，常有这么一手。
It is thought...
It is believed...
It is regarded...
要是当作普通的被语态，会很迷惑：到底什么“被视为”？
其实，这是引出众观点的一种方式，致相当于我们所说的“人们认为/有人认为”。
有副词修饰的时候，我们可以看得更清楚：
It is widely/generally believed...
人们广泛/一般认为……
还有，
Their method is marked by effectiveness.
他们的方法特点是有效。
I am impressed by the unique approach of the primitive people.
我对先民的独特方法印象深刻。
有些不那么正宗的被动，更值得注意：不再是be done by, 后面的介词变了。
我们最熟悉的know是其中一例。
They are known as "the rich".
他们被称为“有钱人”。（还是有“被”字的，偶然）
They are known for their wealth.
他们因其财富而有名。
Rich people are also known in my home town.
在我的家乡也有有钱人。（这个挑战最，英汉句式似不搭界）
Everybody is entitled to privacy.
每个人都有隐私权。
Every truth is covered with dark clouds.
每一个真理都盖着黑云。
Every word is intended for using.
每一个词目的都是使用。
老鞋暂未穷尽所有。记住：被动不被，见之杀无赦！
